BLOOM Educators Program

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is offering a four-day professional development workshop to Maine high school, middle school, and informal science teachers interested in working with Bigelow scientists to increase their knowledge and enhance ocean science education in Maine. Participants will spend a day in the field on a research cruise, attend seminars by Bigelow scientists and engage in hands-on laboratory learning activities. All attendees will receive curriculum materials, laboratory equipment and follow-up academic year support. Housing near the Lab, a transportation reimbursement and some meals will be provided.

TO REGISTER, please complete the following form. The number of workshop participants is limited to 10 teachers; all additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list.

A refundable deposit of $100 is required to hold your spot in the program. The full deposit will be returned upon successful completion of the program. Cancellations will be refunded in full if the spot can be filled by another participant on the waiting list.

Curriculum Testing

You will receive an ocean science curriculum that integrates the topics covered during the program and uses the equipment that you will receive. These lesson plans are new this year and we’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to improve them.

We received a grant from Maine Sea Grant to develop and test this curriculum. We are able to offer teachers a $300 stipend for the time it takes to teach the lesson(s) and provide feedback. You do not have to be teaching an ocean science course for the materials to be relevant as we intend to connect the activities to the science standards you are already teaching.
